The world-renowned Shamwari, a 20 000ha conservation project was established in 1993. Since then many reserves, namely Kwandwe, Pumba, Kariega, Kwantu and many more have been established around Grahamstown what is a malaria free area.

The hunters have made the Eastern Cape the fastest growing hunting area in South Africa.

Stock farming takes the form of cattle, sheep and dairy. Sheep farming tends to be in the areas north of Grahamstown whilst cattle in slightly better rainfall areas with dairy moving towards permanent water schemes such as the Fish and Sundays River areas.
